Church Website wrote:The last edition of the Book of Mormon supervised by Joseph Smith was the third edition published in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1840. The work of the third edition began with Ebenezer Robinson, who used a copy of the second edition with revisions marked in pencil by Joseph Smith. One important change in the third edition corrected the language describing Nephites as a “white and delightsome people” to a “pure and delightsome people.” Because some future editions of the Book of Mormon based their text on the second edition of 1837, uncorrected verbiage persisted until the 1981 edition reverted the text to Joseph Smith’s 1840 correction.
Let's be fair, shall we? In the case and context of 2 Nephi 30:6, I don't criticize or blame Smith for changing "white" to "pure" because I think he was making a correction that better reflects his original intentions in describing his view of the state of a soul as opposed to bodily skin color which is mentioned elsewhere throughout the text. The terminology "white and a delightsome" or "pure and a delightsome" is not so much related to skin color but to brightness and purity, for example:
  • Alma 5:24; whose garments are cleansed and are spotless, pure and white
  • D&C 20:6; garments were pure and white above all other whiteness
  • 1835 First Vision Account; an angel appeared before me, his hands and feet were naked pure and white
Good point.

Also, I don’t think the prejudices of antiquity are any better than the prejudices of today. They are different, but not really less offensive in some kind of abstract way.
So take that, fictional Book of Mormon characters! Be less abstract and offensive. Seek to emulate the nobility of Samwise Gamgee or the zen of Johnathan Livingston Seagull!
Now that's a book I would read.

It looks like we're quickly approaching the day Elder Ashton spoke of...if we're not already there. Many minds have been changed, in and out of the church.

Yes, I agree; many minds have been changed, in and out of the church. The Church has 47 years under its belt since ordaining dark-skinned Africans into its priesthood club. The Mormon church is fast approaching the half century mark in which to find a worthy candidate who is fit and worthy to be ordained an Apostle. Now that will be a game changer, someday!

But will it happen in your life? Don't count on it.

You should know, MG, that others are ahead of the game and reject the hateful racist doctrines taught by Brigham Young:

We'll see! Times they are a changin'.

This church mainly uses black people as props and for propaganda. In most church materials and publications you would think 80% of the church was black. It's misleading, exploitative, manipulative and racist.

That's remarkable! At least one branch of Mormonism is getting it right.
