I remember hearing stories about previous gen of BYU students who would run off to Vegas and get married for a weekend so sex wouldn't be a sin. It's a very Mormon way of thinking.
This shows how misguided the Mormon's ban on sex outside of marriage. It is impractical. So adherents come up with sophistries such as the Vegas weekend marriage to justify doing what we are biologically programmed to desire and do.
Authoritarianism maximizes the chance younger girls will end up with older leaders, or that women in general will be pressured toward pragmatic relations with older leaders due to resource scarcity. And so I think in practice, polygamy as a doctrine is just a cover.
A cover, indeed. Caught in the barn banging the young house maid? "But we're married" even though sex is the only indicia from the incident and the interactions that resembles marriage relations.
But, if there are cases where 2 of one wish to marry 3 of the other, and one of the three identifies as one of the two, and so which is really the two and which is really the three? -- but all are consenting adults of sound mind and reasonable financial resources, then be my guest. I don't want to know about it, but I don't forbit it.
Throuples are starting to pop up in popularity. Joseph Smith would have fared much better in today's sexually enlightened society than he did in his own time. I doubt he'd have been tarred and feathered today.
"There will come a time when the rich own all the media, and it will be impossible for the public to make an informed opinion." Albert Einstein, ~1949 "It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere." Voltaire
It also leads to the practice of ejecting young men from the community:
Lost boys (Mormon fundamentalism) wrote:"Lost boys" is a term used for young men who have been excommunicated or pressured to leave polygamous Mormon fundamentalist groups, such as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS). Although sometimes officially accused of apostasy or disobedience, it is thought that they are mainly pressured to leave by older adult men to reduce competition for wives within such sects, usually when they are between the ages of 13 and 21.
Indeed. That is the shortsighted solution to the obvious problem. It is inhumane and self-destructive. Mormon polygamy simply does not work.
"He disturbs the laws of his country, he forces himself upon women, and he puts men to death without trial.” ~Otanes on the monarch, Herodotus Histories 3.80.

If it sounds like Mormon marriage, why shouldn't we give it the benefit of the doubt that sex on a hayloft constituted a valid Mormon wedding and sealing? Should this Kirkland couple be forced to go to Vegas or have a third party bounce on the hay to simulate soaking?

One might then ask, is there any difference in Mormonism between a marriage and adultery?

The words spoken might vary. I think the marriage also requires a certificate from the State, but the binding in Heaven is probably similar.

I thought a third party bouncing on a bed while soaking was to simulate sex. But how does one simulate soaking?

It's as though a new set of definitions is needed to discuss LDS sexual matters. No matter what, Arizona is reconsidering the sexual abuse reporting requirement of the LDS Church when horrendous cases are reported to them. Perhaps new information regarding soaking will be released, as well as third-party insurance limits to cover Arizona Supreme Court bribes.
It seems Joseph Smith considered his having sex with a woman was sufficient to have "sealed" her to him as a wife, but he didn't bother to take care of her. Definitionally then, he was incapable of adultery, as long as he anointed her with his penis.
Critics, such as yourself, seem to be overly concerned and even fixated on penises. Why is that?

Because we is suppozed to keep our little handsies off our little factories. It's the General Authorities who are fixated on penises, not the rest of us. They even have to ask 11 and 12 year olds about them in private interviews MG.......let that sink in....SINK IN.

Yeah, the barn behind the house out of Emma's sight was their honeymoon after all.....

Internet conspiracy theories. Very difficult to prove in practice except for isolated stories put out there typically by critics (which may or may not be true), would be my uneducated guess.
I've never known this to be the case in my rather long experience in the church. Never.
But I'm not here to start an argument on this score. If you want to believe what you hear, that's up to you.
