It makes sense when one understands that they view everyone in terms of ownership. In many conservative circles it isn’t uncommon for men to discuss returning the right to vote to men only, because men are the political head of the family. They view men as having dominion over their family as God has dominion over everyone. Dominion is just a cool way to say, “I own you.”
That’s why slavery also seems reasonable for so many because a literal patriarchy is a system defined by a hierarchy that falls under The Natural Order.
