I was up at the border last week. The discount mall just south of the border is dead, dead, dead. Business at our tourist Bavarian-style town is way down. The last time I was north of the border, "Buy B.C." signs were everywhere. Trump's disdain and disrespect of Canada is hurting lots of American businesses.Philo Sofee wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2026 4:19 amCanada appears to me to be hedging its bets. So far as I understand it, it is maintaining cooperation with the U.S. where it is necessary. But it also is simultaneously deepening ties with Europe and Ukraine because it no longer sees Washington as fully predictable or stable under Trump. Did you hear that the Donald now thinks Venezuela should become the 51st state?! The man is certifiably insane I tell you. Some Schmo wrote: ↑Mon May 11, 2026 11:00 pmMAGAtes are currently losing their crap over Obama visiting the Prime Minister of Canada.
idiots.
Probably has something to do with Canadians actually liking Obama and knowing Trump is a moron.

I have a Canadian business associate who turned me on to a YouTube channel called "Guard the Leaf" made by an anonymous Canadian. These videos are all about how Americans are clueless to the way Canadians feel about the US right now. He covers all kinds of things like tourism losses, the Kentucky and Tennessee whisky business and how it's losing millions, and how idiotic Republican politicians in boarder states talk about the US/Canadian relationship right now, which he points out over and over again is clueless and missing the point.Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2026 5:53 pmI was up at the border last week. The stats are pretty staggering, and they all point to huge losses for American businesses directly because of Trump policies and moronic rhetoric. As has been pointed out over and over, racism is very expensive.
If Obama were reelected, it's possible we could repair the relationship damage Trump has done (because Obama is actually competent, something a MAGAte will never recognize because they don't know what competence looks like), but I doubt any civilized western democracy is going to trust the US again in the next 50 years at minimum.

A nation's reputation is like one's personal reputation: it takes time and work to build, but can be destroyed in a thoughtless instant. The rest of the world cannot afford to trust Americans because they elected Trump the second time, knowing who he is. Other countries cannot afford to take the risk that we will just turn around and elect another Trump. Some Schmo wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2026 6:06 pmI have a Canadian business associate who turned me on to a YouTube channel called "Guard the Leaf" made by an anonymous Canadian. I blame mostly the swing voters in purple state who voted for Trump than the Ajax type folks in red states who voted for Trump. The swing voters in the swing states who voted for Trump should've known better not to have voted for Trump. And Trump likely wouldn't have won if they didn't vote for him. Some Schmo wrote: ↑Sun Apr 26, 2026 7:59 amI can't blame Trump for running. He's too stupid to know better. Even if we manage oust Trump and most of his current, appointed minions, the authors of "Project 25" are still around and trying mightily to exert and strengthen their influence.Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2026 6:18 pm

I'm somewhat sympathetic to this take, but ultimately, everyone should have known better, red state or not.Brack wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2026 7:34 pmI blame mostly the swing voters in purple state who voted for Trump than the Ajax type folks in red states who voted for Trump. I was living in deep red counties for both elections Trump won. The information has always been out there for those willing to acknowledge it. His fans wanted a racist rapist.

Exactly. Most Americans seem to have no concept of the importance of our country's reputation on the world stage and are unaware that global trade is currently realigning to limit the US's involvement and influence.Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2026 6:18 pmA nation's reputation is like one's personal reputation: it takes time and work to build, but can be destroyed in a thoughtless instant. Agreed. Just talked to a gas station owner friend today and he said in two weeks we're seeing $5.00 gas. By the July 4th, $5.75 and higher...... Diesel will simply blow your mind and scare the crap out of us how it affects everything else we buy. Some Schmo wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2026 10:58 pmExactly. There was a troubling article in Bloomberg a couple of days ago. If the situation stays as it is into June, the US will run out of oil in September. That’s how long it takes to get the supply chain working again.Philo Sofee wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2026 11:11 pmAgreed. Indeed.Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2026 6:18 pmA nation's reputation is like one's personal reputation: it takes time and work to build, but can be destroyed in a thoughtless instant. Global sentiment and national images are much slower to change than any domestic news cycle. On the global scale, memories stay fresh for decades. The United States had a huge amount of respect from the rest of the world for a century or so, based on many enormous achievements and contributions. The shame of Trump will last for generations as well.
Of course it’s not that eight years of Trump are actually going to outweigh Lincoln, the World Wars, the moon landings, and everything else. It’s that the eight years of Trump have revealed that the huge American achievements and contributions were events in the past, and not just the kind of things that the United States always did. Electing a Trump is now also one of the things that the United States sometimes does.
There may be more huge American achievements in future, but even if there are, the world will now long remember that the United States is never more than four years away from electing a Trump. The feet of clay have been seen, and they cannot just be unseen.
