New List of Religious Faiths Being Unrecognized By the Pentagon

Post by Gunnar »

The Defense Department moved last month to cut roughly 180 religion codes from its previous list of about 220 recognized faiths.

The new list, expected to take effect in July, recognizes 31 religious categories, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Baha’i, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, and non-religion. Christian denominations make up the majority of the new recognized religion categories. The military notes that individuals can still list religions not among the named 31 on their dog tags.

Others took issue with the fact that the new list does not include the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as among its recognized Christian religions, instead listing it under a separate designation.

“Can anyone tell me why The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was left out of the list of Christian churches?” wrote GOP Utah Sen. Mike Lee, himself a Mormon, on X.

The updated Pentagon policy revises, cuts, and consolidates a 2017 list of about 220 different religions and denominations, many of which are now lumped into umbrella categories, such as evangelical Christian, or described under the vague label of “other religions.”
How do you feel about this Ajax? Do you still think that Trump and his administration are God's choice?

I don't think politics will be divided into Democrat and Republican tribes/ideologies when Christ returns. Christ will be our lawgiver and king.

It's the same as I feel about Donald Trump making fun of Mitt Romney about the Golden plates. Dallin Oaks himself said recently in the 250th anniversary of the Constitution that no one should be expected to agree with every party position to vote for their preferred candidate, else nobody would ever be able to vote. So I shouldn't be telling people that they can't be temple recommend holding Mormons because they voted Democrat and Democrats believe that the woman has the right to kill her fetus right up to the moment of birth and in some cases even after birth. This position is clearly against the Mormon doctrine defining murder. And while any Latter day saint who performed or participated in such an abortion should be immediately excommunicated, it doesn't mean that people who vote Democrat for other reasons should be excommunicated or even have their temple recommend taken because their party is clearly in the wrong before God on a single issue.

I'll take Trump over Mitt Romney every time. But that doesn't mean that either one of them were God's choice. And at least they used the full and correct name of the Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Anyone who comes to our meetings or classes knows that we're directed whenever we speak in Church to always start with Christ and end with Christ.

"And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins."

That's enough for me. I don't give a rip if some evangelical wants to exclude us as nonChristian. I know what we are and what we believe in. Nor do any of my evangelical friends try to call me nonChristian. We share faith promoting stories to uplift each other whenever we speak. I hate Bible bashing. It's not how the Lord Jesus works to change and improve the hearts of men.

Unlike you, I do "give a rip" about whether some evangelical (or anyone else) wants to exclude "Mormons" or LDS as Christians, even though I no longer believe in the Church's truth claims. I think this change is, at least implicitly, an unacceptable weakening of the Constitutional guarantee of and respect for religious freedom.

Of far greater concern and even disgust to me, though, is the continuing near worshipful support and loyalty by too many of our fellow citizens for Donald Trump, the incontrovertibly most dishonest, most corrupt and avariciously self-serving and even felonious President our beloved country has ever foolishly collectively inflicted upon itself! Continuing support for him is approximately on the same cognizant level as insisting that the world must be flat (or voting for an absolutely despotic government).

Well here you go Gunnar. Our LDS senators Mike Lee, Mike Kennedy, and John Curtis did speak out. They spoke to President Trump and the President has fixed the oversight.

President Nelson was right when said, "If we don't insist on calling the Church by its real name, the devil has already won the battle." That being said it's foolish to not try to build alliances by attempting to find common beliefs upon which we can build.

One thing I and President Trump respect about Democrats is how loyal they are to each other. We've had way too much division in the Republican party already, and it shouldn't be tolerated. None of these differences justify putting people like Ayana Presley, Karen Bass, Zoram Mamdani, Barack Obama, or Joe Biden in office, which is exactly what Mitt Romney did by focusing all his attention on fighting other Republicans. I don't care what Mitt says. I judge him by the results of his statements and what he chose to focus on. And those results were catastrophic for conservatives.

Rather than add the "Christian" modifier to the LDS Church, they instead went back and removed it from everyone. They would rather remove the Christian label from everyone else, than give it to the Mormons. But yeah... we'll call that fixing an oversight.

Meanwhile, scores of faiths, practiced by men and women who have died for our country, that predated even the Hebert memo for DoD handbook, have now been removed from being recognized by the military (and by extension, the government they die to protect). One of the great ironies is a lot of the faiths that have been jettisoned by the cosplay templar drunk were added in Trump's first term.

At first they came for the...

Jesus Christ if you would only expand that into politics instead of hypocritically sucking on Trump from behind all the time and condemning all others who refuse to immorally do so.

I was paraphrasing President Oaks. What makes you think I would ever take any advice from someone who speaks to me the way you do, much less build on common beliefs? It doesn't look like we have any common beliefs, other than you recently revealing that you didn't like the idea of everyone being put on social security and medicare due to advances in AI.

Two takeaways I got from this.
  1. The spiritual advisers that Trump has picked are just there to help Trump pretend to be Christian. After all, if they were truly his spiritual advisers, their repeatedly stated belief that Mormonism is a cult would have had more sway for Trump than a small handful of podcasters and representatives calling him direct.
  2. Mormons still have a large amount of power within the Republican party, despite the party as a whole (and its Christian Nationalists that Mormon MAGA folks try to pretend they're part of) itching to jettison them to the garbage heap. The fact that several representatives and a podcaster were able to easily get on the phone directly with the President (one of which was supposedly late at night) is pretty wild. Thankfully for Mormons, Trump doesn't' actually hold any Christian beliefs (particularly those of Christian nationalists), and is just a quid-pro-quo grifter who still sees utility in being friendly towards Utah's voting base. MAGA Mormons are still a useful mark in the con.

Practicing Mormonism conditions people to be good little cultists, perfect for MAGAte compliance. The GOP hates people who habitually think.
Religion is for people whose existential fear is greater than their common sense. It's also the favored cover for hypocrites.

The god idea is popular with desperate people.
