Anyone who wants to be a moderator is a bad choice to be a moderator
There’s some truth in that. I have no desire to do a second shift as moderator here. But it’s clear that Shades needs some help. Sometimes you just have to suck it up, roll up your sleeves, and get it done.
ETA: Shades requires that moderators volunteer. Nominations are ignored.

Yep. All of the above.
There are folks here who have already served and I am sure would be willing to serve if only short term to tide Shades over until he's able to collect up new volunteers. And when I say I am sure. I'm sure.
It's like calling up the reserves.

Stop doing that. It's intellectually dishonest and juvenile.

To set the record straight: I don’t now and have never believed that Shades is doing Cultellus’s bidding. Based on my experience with Shades, that’s laughable. I’ve never seen him do anyone’s bidding. He does have a bias in favor of individuals that he believes are being ganged up on or shouted down. He’s scrupulous about making sure that he doesn’t take action based on a bandwagon effect.
That bias has drawn some criticism here. Someone who comes here to disrupt can take advantage of that bias. My own view is that this bias is entirely consistent with the high value he places on free speech and the clash of ideas. Before he imposes restrictions on a member’s ability to post here, he wants to assess their behavior in a context where no one is trying to shout down or bait or troll or dogpile on that member. In other words, he wants to see how that member behaves when everyone else is following the rules rather than resorting to self help.
Yes, this approach can make things easier for a person who comes here with a malicious intent. But that is 100% solvable by how we respond. If you think someone is here for malicious reasons, give that person lots of rope. Give Shades what he is looking for: how the person behaves when everyone else is following the rules.
