CDC vaccine advisers to meet again after FDA committee decides on a coronavirus vaccine

Vaccine advisers to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will meet again after their counterparts at the US Food and Drug Administration decide whether to recommend authorizing a coronavirus vaccine, likely next week.

The CDC’s Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices voted Tuesday to recommend that if and when a vaccine gets emergency use authorization from the FDA, it should go first to both health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities, who have been hardest hit by the pandemic.

The next meeting will come after the FDA’s advisers, known as the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee or VRBPAC, meet on Dec. 10 to decide on Pfizer’s application for an EUA, said ACIP’s executive secretary, Dr. Amanda Cohn.

“We anticipate that the next ACIP meeting will occur sometime after the VRPBAC meeting,” Cohn said. ACIP will vote to recommend whether any vaccine the FDA authorizes should actually be given to anyone in the US.

So what did it feel like?

"The actual injection felt, at first, just like a flu shot, which is basically just a little pinch in the side of your arm," Batalvi said. "Once I left the hospital, that evening, the stiffness got a little bit worse. It was definitely manageable, but you kind of don't really feel like moving your arm too far above your shoulder. But the side effects are pretty localized. I mean, it's just in the muscle in your arm. And that's about it. It doesn't really affect anything else and you feel fine."

That was after the first dose. But the second dose was different.

"I actually had some pretty significant symptoms after I got the second dose. Once I got the second dose, I was fine while I was in the hospital. But that evening was rough. I mean, I developed a low-grade fever, and fatigue and chills," Batalvi said. He said he was out for that day and evening, but he "felt ready to go by the next morning."

Excuse me. I don't see those side effects as very significant. I had worse with the shingles shot. I did two L&D's without medication. Fever schmever. I don't care if the needle has to go directly into the bone. Lay that stuff on me.

We had more Americans die from Covid than died in The War of 1812, or the Spanish-American War, or the Gulf War. In one day. with over 270,000 fatalities and the pace of infection increasing, Covid is the third deadliest war in American history.

This should be a time of hope. Great Britain gets a vaccine next week. The Calvary hasn't arrived, but you can hear the bugles. It is both infuriating and tragic to see so many people put their own lives at risk, not to mention the health care workers they will burden with their carelessness.

Yes! Dr. Fauci said when you know the cavalry is on the way, you don't stop shooting.

I do worry about thousands upon thousands of health care workers who are no doubt suffering from a combination of battle fatigue and PTSD. How could so much of America be so damned selfish? I have a brother who is right now holed up in a rehab center after having his leg amputated from the knee down, a faraway friend who is a heart failure patient recovering from Covid--she has a 5 year old child, and a relative who has multiple health issues who works the front end cash register at a busy food market because she has to work to support herself and her disabled brother whose SSDI doesn't cover much of anything.

Staying home is hard? Wearing a mask when you go out is hard? All I can think is---you know what----Screw you people.

Since then, the official confirmed death toll has increased by more than 27,000. Even using just the raw number of excess deaths in the CDC data would place the true current death toll at over 372,000, but it’s certain that deaths continued to be undercounted.

Crazy days.

Edit: Also, here locally 1 in 4 tests are coming back positive and we haven’t seen the holiday bump, yet.
