Why bother telling the bishop anything? I don't see how it's any of his business.

At any rate, he had a vasectomy and within days I had a hysterectomy, so he got snipped for nothing.

In that case, why did he bother with getting snipped? They sell certain prophylactic devices at Wal-Mart that prevent pregnancy just fine.

That's probably part of what upset the bishop. My husband and I had both made permanent decisions on birth control and I guess it irritated the bishop that we didn't ask permission first. The bishop said specifically that my husband should have spoken with him first and that it was frowned upon by the Lord for him to have a vasectomy.

So your husband told him he'd had a vasectomy? What business of the bishop's was it to know that?

I'd never heard that before.

That's 'cause they don't share the Church Handbook of Instructions. You can't be faulted for not knowing something you weren't informed of.

The bishop wasn't just our bishop, he lived in our neighborhood and we were very close to him and his family. He and his wife were kind of like surrogate parents to me. We dog-sat each others dogs, we sometimes ate dinner together, the bishop's wife and I shopped together and I hosted her sixtieth birthday party.

I told the bishop and his wife about my hysterectomy because they were my friends and because I wanted comfort from my bishop. I was honestly distraught. In my Mormon mind I thought I had let down my little boy and that he would be given to another family. It made me sad. My husband informed the bishop that he had a vasectomy, because he considered him a friend and had no clue it was something that was to be discussed with the bishop beforehand. We were both surprised by his response.

Our bishop was more familiar with us than most bishops are with their congregants. But, he turned on me quickly when I decided to leave the church. Then I saw a side of him I didn't know existed and it was ugly.

Oh, and as for the raincoats, they're not even an option for me. I hate them. As far as I'm concerned, if I must have something covered in rubber it might as well vibrate.

Then you've obviously not experienced the finer techniques of condom usage. That being the case, the next time you're in Utah, look me up and I will be happy to give you a personalized lesson on the proper pleasure-enhancement methodology of condom use.

Surgical Sterilization (Including Vasectomy)

The Church strongly discourages surgical sterilization as an elective form of birth control. It should be considered only if (1) medical conditions seriously jeopardize life or health or (2) birth defects or serious trauma have rendered a person mentally incompetent and not responsible for his or her actions. Such conditions must be determined by competent medical judgment and in accordance with law. Even then, the persons responsible for this decision should consult with each other and with their bishop and should receive divine confirmation of their decision through prayer.

The full handbook is available online at the following URL:

The bolded emphasis is mine.

So, if I read this right, mentally challenged people and the patients on the Mental Wards are okay to be steralized, but for everyone else, it is only if your life is in danger.

I have a drawer full of white underwear that says otherwise.

And we learn a valuable lesson....don't wear white underwear. It never stays that way.

I posted such a sad little story and now this thread has turned into a discussion of condom lessons, vibrators and man-thongs, lol! For some reason many of my threads end up this way - and it doesn't matter what the original topic is. Strange.

I wonder why Shades has Hysteria as his avatar when he could have the much better album, Pyromania? I mean, everyone knows Def Leppard sold out on the Hysteria album - it's nothing but a collection of chick songs. I should know. Back in high school, I played the dickens out of that tape in my little red mustang! Still, I like Pyromania so much better.

PS - I'm seriously biting my tongue on the Runtu/thong thing. My tongue is bleeding.

Sorry KA, I guess joke telling is a defense mechanism that many people pickup. (especially on Mormondiscussions)

I thought your story was very sad. :( (many HUGS)
