I was taught that God used materials from other worlds to make ours, and that's how we happen to have stuff over 6,000 years old.
That's nice. Its also irrelevant. Its not official Church doctrine and never was.
It was taught. It is relevant.
Nobody can pin down Mormon doctrine, but we do know what we were taught.
Everyone seems to forget the verification by God portion of good teaching.
I was taught last year that God made all stellar bodies round and that is why there are no square or rectangular ones like you expect. Just smile, nod, and move on.
You are the epitome of one who has been indoctrinated. You appear to have very limited capacity to think to use your brain for something other than a receptacle for religious dogma others pour into it.

Funny, everyone who knows me thinks differently, both LDS and non-LDS. I've been defined by many as eccentric in fact. I accept the description. I am passionate and have a rich fantasy life.
Your worldview does not fulfil me JAK. I have desires that can never be fulfilled on this Earth and I know that. Either the Universe is a cheat or I was made for a better world. If that limits my thinking then by all means limit it more. I do not think it does. When I'm engaged in real prayer the thoughts and images fly fast and quick. It is not a tranquil experience. If my mind is not in top form I go into a form of mental overload.

Well, I heard my mother telling me this, but I'd like chapter and verse from you or Scratch to support the statement above.

I think we all know that many teachings of the church don't have chapter and verse. I remember hearing it the first time in Seminary, never mind how many years ago. Are you going to say it's irrelevant too?
I think what the Apologists are saying is that as young children, teenagers, and even adults we were/are supposed to ignore the teachings of our Primary, Sunday School, and Seminary teachers. We should have known that they were just making stuff up. It was all their personal opinions. The fact that so many church teachers just happen to be teaching the exact same pseudo-doctrines is just a silly coincidence.
"We of this Church do not rely on any man-made statement concerning the nature of Deity. Our knowledge comes directly from the personal experience of Joseph Smith." - Gordon B. Hinckley
"It's wrong to criticize leaders of the Mormon Church even if the criticism is true." - Dallin H. Oaks
After thinking about it for a while, I may have come to an understanding of the point you were trying to make with your dog/reptile comments. I had assumed that you were claiming that evolution taught that dogs descended directly from reptiles. This is obviously not the case. Mammals share a common ancestor with reptiles around 290 million years ago. Dogs then evolved from a mammalian ancestor (think branching, like a tree). I think your post was an attempt at arguing nomenclature, the whole dogs aren't dogs until they're dogs thing. I'm not really sure. Anyhow, if I misunderstood your post, I apologize. I still like the statement you made that I'm using as a quote.

It's because these pseudo-explanations get passed around.
You're supposed to grow beyond what you were taught in Primary, Sunday School, and Seminary. That's a juvenile understanding of the Gospel that has served it's purpose only if you keep going. In High School my simplistic understanding of history was blown to pieces and replaced. In College it happened again. It is still going on now in my own private studies.

Glad you agree with me. Unless you meant to say that all religious claims are mythical.

Any religious claims that can be tested by empirical means and fail to hold up to such scrutiny are mythical. Those that cannot be tested are left up to the discretion of the believer. ;)
