My niece-in-law sent a note to my aunt that said: "Thank you for the cake plate. I won't use it though because I never bake cakes." At least my aunt knew the gift had arrived. I've never gotten a note from my niece-in-law, but that's okay because I've found other qualities that I can appreciate in her.
I remember my wife requiring me to sign all the thank you notes, because she said both signatures were required. I think this is a women thing to be polite and respectful regarding the giving of gifts. For the men (whether Mormon or not) the correct normative behavior would be to grab the towels or Cuisinart and drag them to the back of the cave and scatter them about.

It sounds like they were just rude. I don't know that this is a "TBM" thing. I think it's just a matter of whether or not you have been taught proper social graces.

AMEN!!!!!!
If my friend gives me a gift and I sent a thank-you card they'd probably wonder what had happened to me and I'd lose my guy membership card (good for reduced-price boxers and dumbbells).

That was you as a Mormon Porter. So when do you do nice gestures now?
Nehor, the chat function you participate in here on this board? that was paid for by PP. Did you know that or conveniently forget ?
Both and neither.
