Polygamy inherently means older men marrying much younger women. It's not just an ugly quirk that sometimes happened in Utah. It's a mathematical necessity. The numbers of male and female children of any one given age are always close to equal, but if the total population is growing exponentially, then the number of women born in a later year will be greater than the number of men born in an earlier year. For any given rate of exponential population growth, finding a larger ratio of women to men requires looking at a younger cohort of women. If men are to find large numbers of wives, the wives have to be much younger.

Furthermore, the rate of population growth is limited by the number of women who are bearing children, regardless of how many fathers are involved. So the only way that polygamy can possibly increase the rate of population growth, and "raise up" a religious community, is by getting women to have children younger.

Young girls getting pregnant by much older men wasn't just an occasional glitch in Mormon polygamy. It was the mathematically inevitable and central point of the whole system. Polygamy is a euphemism. What it meant was pedogamy.

And the real reason why Mormon polygamy had to cease was that the population was never going to be able to keep growing exponentially at a high enough rate to supply all those younger wives. As soon as the growth rate started dropping, polygamy was bound to collapse. Whether or not people understood what was happening, they would have noticed that the old system was no longer working because there just weren't enough girls to go around any more.
