In the study, which was carried out in April and May when Danish authorities did not recommend wearing face masks, 6,024 adults were divided into two groups, one wearing face masks and one control group.

After one month, 1.8% of the people wearing masks had been infected, while 2.1% of the people in the control group had tested positive, Copenhagen University Hospital said in a press release.

“The study does not confirm the expected halving of the risk of infection for people wearing face masks,” it said. “The results could indicate a more moderate degree of protection of 15-20%, however, the study could not rule out that face masks do not provide any protection.”

Still, even according to that study, a smaller percentage of people wearing masks were infected than those not wearing masks. What apparently makes the biggest difference is not whether or not one wears a mask, per se, but what proportion of the population is wearing masks. If only a fairly small minority of people are wearing masks in a particular community, even that minority is probably more likely to get infected than even individuals who don't wear masks at all in a community where almost everyone else does.
Countries where everyone wore masks saw COVID death rates 100 times lower than projected.

The study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, found that some factors, including the local rates of smoking and obesity, urbanization, older populations, and colder average temperatures, were associated with more COVID deaths. Restrictions on international travel were associated with fewer deaths. And mask wearing had a very clear impact. Countries with widespread mask wearing saw mortality rates grow 8% a week, on average, versus 54% growth in other countries.

It’s something that couldn’t have easily been studied in the past, since the comparison had to look at entire countries and wait for the pandemic to progress. “If you really want to know all of the benefit, you have to look at a whole population,” Leffler says. “If I wear a mask, it protects you. If you wear a mask, it protects me. So in the countries wear 95% or more of the people wear a mask, the other 5% still got benefits, because they were in a country where the virus just couldn’t spread.”

So, though mask usage is not a 100% guarantee against catching the virus, there is very little reasonable doubt that widespread mask use effectively helps to slow the spread.

The most important thing about the Danish study is to read it. The study was not designed to measure the difference between wearing masks and not wearing masks. The study was set up to measure the effect of advising people to wear masks in an environment where the government was not requiring or advising citizens to wear masks and mask wearing was not common among the general population.

The study divided the participants into two groups. One group received advice to wear masks, 50 free surgical masks, and instructions on how to use them. They also received follow up messages that Encouraged them to wear masks. The control group received none of this. Both group received at home antibody test kits and were instructed to test periodically.

The rate of infection was .3 percentage points lower in the test group than in the control group, but the difference is not statistically significant. But perhaps the most telling feature about the results was the range of the 95% confidence interval. It was consistent with any result from a 46% reduction in disease to a 23% increase in disease.

The study did some ad hoc calculations based on subgroups with the test group, but those also did not produce statistically significant results and the 95% confidence was even broader.

So, this study did not find that, in a setting where the general public does not wear masks and the government does not recommend wearing masks, giving people masks and advising them to wear the masks resulted in a statistically significant reduction of infection in the people who were advised to wear masks. It was a test of advising people to wear masks, not a test of whether universal mask wearing would reduce the rate of infection.

And, as the authors repeatedly say in the study, the study did not even attempt to measure the effect of source control, i.e., preventing an infected person from spreading the disease to an unintended person.

It does not prove that masks don’t work. It isn’t even evidence that masks don’t work.

I am a CCU nurse who worked the covid floor of our hospital on and off for three months. I contracted the virus two weeks ago and yesterday discovered I have a pulmonary embolism. I'm 14 days in, struggling to breathe and struggling to stay alive. This is all anecdotal, I'm a nobody on the internet but I beg you please wear your mask, please follow the guidelines. For what it is worth i began to feel fine but yesterday morning had some chest pain and spiked a fever. My HR was in the 140s and I my O2 in the high 80s by the time the ambulance got me I had dropped to 77%. I felt like I was suffocating and was powerless. I'm in my 30s, I work out and have no comorbidities. I'm responding to meds but I had a 40 year old patient die a few weeks ago so I've seen first hand what can happen and now I'm living and potentially dying in my own hellish reality. Again, you don't have to believe me I'm a nobody on the internets and this comment will be lost but I beg you please do what's right. If you don't wear your mask, don't follow the guidelines you are the reason me and 11 million in this country are sick and why a quarter of a million are dead. I don't want to die. I'm alone and I just want to see my wife and kids. Im suffocating and I'm scared and it could have been prevented.

To be fair, I failed to see the actual point of the post. I took the time to watch both videos and one was obvious politics and the other was obvious politics. Whatever you were driving for was lost in the fog of a base emotional appeal i suppose. Was your intention to justify Biden's policy positions with his ability to feign tears on a youtube video?
