ha, yeah. Well, ultimately a long-term moderating model will be something Shades endorses. For many years his system has worked and I think it's just some bad interaction of events right now.

I don't have a problem giving people lots of chances if it can be done without too much work.

For political discussions these days you almost have to give people some extra chances.
At some point, though, i think it is instructive to step back and look at the overall pattern of contributions. Any neutral viewing would acknowledge that multiple lengthy discussions by long term participants were utterly destroyed by trolls taking advantage, sadly.

Shades does, however, have a very unique model. Many other communities simply ban trolls, but Shades’ free speech rule is admirable, in that trolling, by his rules, is technically just another form of expression. Based on the research, this is by no means a resolved issue. What people almost always focus on is the concept that the price for freedom of speech, when trolls latch on, inevitably results in a long term inability to form communities and have strong conversations. Shade’s rule of ultimately limiting such participation to certain forums, when enacted, is literally the single best solution to this problem that I’ve come across is my reading. Maybe the division into Kingdoms really is god-given.

However, in spite of my opinions as stated above, I still think Gadianton is currently handling this as efficiently and fairly as possible. I just feel bad that he loses out by not feeling free to participate, but his integrity in making that self-rule is very admirable.

I would be happy to help moderate,
Great - Thanks for offering to serve this community.
I’ll check once every few days. Any rule violations I find will result in a 24h ban for the offender. 3 strikes and the account is banned for life.
Wait! What?

Please disregard my comments above. I was just informed that we have plenty of moderators and that your service is not needed. This community is all set. Thanks anyway.

See how the above makes no sense? That's Paradise. To the tune of at least two thousand posts.

ETA: Make that approximately 2K posts.
That’s odd because I’m Doc cam
Just so you are aware, the moderators and admin can see who is using alts on this board.

I would be happy to help moderate, but not enthusiastically and it won’t be editing posts or handing out warnings. My model would be more like Satan. I’ll check once every few days. Any rule violations I find will result in a 24h ban for the offender. 3 strikes and the account is banned for life. Folks who won’t follow the posted rules on their own should not be on the board. Also you don’t want to make me a moderator.
I’d be much more liberal and fair.

I’d listen to what the people want. I’d have compassion above all.

Vote for me.

Unless you’ve owned and ran a discussion board you really aren’t qualified to comment. Back to the corner, sledge.

Moderators aren't called to be liberal or fair, listen to what people want or have compassion. They're here to moderate the board according to it's rules. Sometimes following the letter of the law, other times following the spirit of the law.

Rules can sometimes be interpreted in different ways. I’ve moderated several big boards (in their heyday); I have years of experience.

OMFG. Poops a lot? Poop?

Gad,

They need to have the Three Degrees of Glory down in paradise where people can choose the level of decency they want to participate in while having discussions. It needs to be tiered. That is the only way to fix the problem.

I think that's a great solution and have mentioned it before, but Gad can't build in an additional forum without Shades consent.

Yes he can. Does he not have "God" status? Take the damn bull by the horns and just do it! If I was in his position that is exactly what I would do and then I would tell Shades to deal with it and learn to accept it.

Like Jock Ewing said, "Real power is something you take!"

If I was at the controls, I would insert the tiers in right now.
